two variants pass by Geekbench
ASUS is not happy with the current number of ROG Phone 7 family members. In the last week, an alleged ASUS ROG Phone 7 was spotted making rounds on Geekbench. That variant’s “D” tier was confirmed by its model number ASUS_AI2205_D. Today, it seems that are many more options coming for the market. Two new variants with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 have been spotted, once again, in the Geekbench benchmark.
The two new ASUS ROG Phone 7 variants have model numbers AI2205_B and AI2205_C. These two variants are possibly the vanilla and the Pro versions. However, there are also some reports that say that the C variant is the one for India.
Two ASUS ROG Phone 7 series spotted with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2
All three variants that passed by Geekbench have the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. It comes with a 3.19 GHz Cortex-X3 Prime core. Apparently, the ROG Phone 7 Pro will not bring a higher version of Qualcomm SoC, because it is still not available. Right now, the closest thing we have from a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2 is exclusive to Samsung. It boosts the Prime core to 3.36 GHz. It may be a temporary exclusivity until Qualcomm decides to launch an SD8+ Gen 2. However, it seems that ASUS will not wait for it.
Regardless of the CPU, all three phones have 16 GB of RAM. Since gaming smartphones tend to push on the hardware limits, we also expect at least one 18 GB RAM option. We also expect the use of LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 storage. These standards are becoming common among premium 2023 phones. A gaming smartphone will likely bring this because it needs to impress with cutting-edge hardware.
Gizchina News of the week
As per Gadgetsdata, the ASUS ROG Phone will pack a 6.8-inch Full HD+ resolution with a 165 Hz refresh rate. The phone has an AMOLED display, probably with a QHD+ resolution. In terms of battery, it will be a powerhouse with a 6,000 mAh battery with 65W charging. This does not sound like the most impressive charging as we’re seeing phones with 240W, but we are pretty sure that the battery capacity will pay off. The phone also has an in-display fingerprint scanner.
There is plenty of time until the launch of the ROG Phone 7 series. Despite, the timing of these leaks, the rumors point to a July release. Of course, this seems to take the ROG Phone 6 series launch into consideration. ASUS can launch these gaming phones a bit earlier than usual.
Can the ROG Phone 7 Pro bring the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2?
The ASUS ROG Phone 6 Pro arrived right in time to be one of the first phones with the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. We don’t know whether this will be the case with the ROG Phone 7 Pro, but considering this leak it does not seem to be the case. Last year, Qualcomm was a little bit “in a hurry” to launch the SD8+ Gen 1. The chipmaker was not happy with the heating issues and poor energy efficiency made by the Samsung-made Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.
So it ran to TSMC to bring a new version of the chipset with 10% more performance and 30% more energy efficiency. That gave birth to the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 that we all know. Almost one year after its launch, it is still set to be one of the most popular chipsets of 2023 among flagship killers. ASUS was able to take a ride in the hype for this chipset with the ROG Phone 6 Pro. We don’t know whether this will be the case with the 7 Pro.
Worth noting that the ROG Phone 6D Ultimate came with a Dimensity chipset. Apparently, the 7D will stick with Qualcomm. Anyway, we can’t discard a future variant of the smartphone that uses a MediaTek Dimensity flagship SoC. These brands are always trying to expand their offerings. We expect more leaks to keep popping out. Worth noting that the brand is also gearing up to introduce the ZenFone 10 series in the coming months.
