Chances are, most of the games on your phone need an internet connection to even fire up. It doesn’t affect you all that much because your phone is constantly connected. However, what about those times where you don’t have a signal? Sometimes, you just want to play games offline.

It can be frustrating trying to start games (ones as simple as jigsaw puzzles or RPGs, mind you) only to get the “Can’t connect to server” message when without a signal. Because of times like these, it’s important to have apps that can be played with or without a connection. Here’s a list of the best offline games you can play on Android.

Pirate Outlaws

  • Download Cost: $0.99
  • In-App Cost: No
  • Size: 174MB
  • Google Play Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

Pirate Outlaws is a fun card-based action game that involves, you guessed it, pirate outlaws. The gameplay is pretty unique, as you’ll use attack cards granted to you to attack. The power of your attacks depends on the cards that you get.

Your character starts off with three pieces of ammo, and you need ammo in order to do your attacks. Each attack card you get will use a certain amount of ammo, and if you run out, your turn will end. You can gain ammo by using ammo cards, though.

You can get the game for only $1, and there aren’t any in-app purchases or ads. That’s good news for those who just want a simple game to play.

Unwanted Experiment

  • Download Cost: Free
  • In-App Cost: $0.99
  • Size: 25MB
  • Google Play Rating: 4.6 stars out of 5

This is the perfect game if you’re into the psychological and macabre. Your character is knocked out while snooping around an abandoned shack. After waking up, it’s up to you to escape.

It has gameplay similar to that of the 100 Doors games. You’ll need to collect items and use them to solve puzzles and find your way out. Along the way, you’ll find out more about the person who uses that shack.

There’s a deep story with a dark and twisted tone to it. If you’re into that, then this game is a must-have.

Tiny Room Stories Town Mystery

  • Download Cost: Free
  • In-App Cost: $2.49
  • Size: 188MB
  • Google Play Rating: 4.7 stars out of 5

Tiny Room Stories Town Mystery is a quaint puzzle game with a stylized art style. It’s reminiscent of “100 Doors” games where you need to solve puzzles using items in the environment and your wits to progress to the next section.

This game has a story. Your father asked you urgently to come to a town. However, when you get there, you find the house and the town itself pretty much empty. You’ll need to solve the puzzles in your way and gradually solve the developing mystery you’re presented with.

The game is free to play, but there’s a one-time purchase of $2.49. This will get rid of the ads, give you free hints, and give you an additional chapter.

Nonogram Mon

  • Download Cost: Free
  • In-App Cost: $0.99 – $3.99
  • Size: 40MB
  • Google Play Rating: 4.7 stars out of 5

Nonogram Mon adds a wholesome twist to the nonogram genre. It starts off with a little animated comic of a friendly monster saving a small human child. The monster then adopts the child as his own. The heartfelt relationship becomes the backdrop of the gameplay, but there isn’t really a story to this game.

This is your typical nonogram game. You’re given a grid of empty spaces with a set of numbers above every column and next to every row. If a row or column has a number, then that many squares will be filled in.

Undead vs. Demon is a straightforward game that has you in heated combat versus demons. The gameplay is familiar, but not derivative. On the top of the gameboard, you’ll see rows of demons. You’ll shoot balls at the demons to destroy them.

They’ll ricochet off of the walls of the gameboard and bounce off of enemies until they hit the bottom. As you play, you’ll upgrade your characters to inflict more damage. And you’ll need it, as you’ll also face off against bosses.

Minecraft is a game that needs no introduction. If you’re looking to take your mining and crafting on the go, then you wouldn’t really be missing out if you opt to use the mobile version of the game.

Mojang does a good job at keeping this version of the game up to date along with the console and PC versions. There are obvious cutbacks when it comes to the visuals, but it still looks good considering. You’re still able to play along with friends, so it’s not far off from the full-fledged experience.

Dream Hopper

  • In-App Cost: $$0.99 – $19.99
  • Size: 153MB
  • Google Play Rating: 4.7 stars out of 5

Dream Hopper isn’t as much of a game as it is an experience. It’s different from other titles in that the goal of each level isn’t to beat it. What you’re doing is revealing works of art.

When you start a level, you pilot a small ball called a Hopper. It will fly toward a floating piece of glass. When the Hopper hits it, the piece of glass gains a color and starts glowing. After that, other pieces will appear.

You’ll keep hopping from glass piece to glass piece until you complete a full work of art. It’s an extremely satisfying and relaxing game to play. There are in-app purchases, but they don’t get in the way.

  • In-App Cost: None
  • Size: 90MB
  • Google Play Rating: 4.6 stars out of 5

This game pays homage to the saying that cats are made of liquid (they really are!). It’s a simple and straightforward platformer where you play as the titular liquid cat. What you need to do is navigate your way through obstacles in your levels to make it to the end.

The controls are simple, as there are only two. You move using the left and right arrows on the left of the screen. On the right side, you’ll see the up and down arrows. Pressing the up arrow will make you jump. Pressing the down arrow will turn you into liquid. This acts as a crouch mechanism.

This game is free to download and there are no in-app purchases. All you have to do is play through the game and make it through the levels.

Bloons Adventure Time

  • Download Cost: Free
  • In-App Cost: $0.99 – $99.99
  • Size: 96MB
  • Google Play Rating: 4.2 stars out of 5

The game feels like a callback to the classic tower defense games from back in the day. The enemies are even balloons (or “Bloons”), which are the main enemies in some of the most popular legacy TD games.

This will strike a chord with a lot of people because it involves characters from the beloved cartoon Adventure Time. You’ll play as popular characters from the show, starting with Jake. As you play, you’ll gain more character with different attacks. As you can guess, you’ll earn money as you fight off Bloons to add more characters and upgrade them.

What’s neat about this game is that there are fully-voiced cutscenes. You’ll hear the original cast from the show voicing them, and they contain the classic sense of humor from the show. It’s a treat to play if you’re a fan of Adventure Time.
